"I was born in London in 1938. After leaving school in 1957 I tried various occupations including television camera work at the B.B.C. It was while working there that I started going to pottery classes at Adult Education classes on my days off. I enjoyed these so much that I eventually applied for and was accepted on a ceramics course at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts in London in 1966. I left art school in 1970 and also got married in the same year. My first two workrooms were both in South London; a small room in a first floor flat in Anerley until 1976, Then the cellar of a terraced house in Charlton until 1979. During this period I taught pottery part-time at an Adult Education Centre in Sydenham. In 1979 I moved to Pembrokeshire, Wales where I still live with my family. I no longer teach but pot full-time in a workroom attached to the house. Working method nowidctlpar All work is handbuilt by pinching out a base then adding flattened coils of clay to produce hollow forms. These are sometimes altered, at the leather-hard stage, by cutting and rejoining to create ridges or grooves between curving surfaces. Finally they are scraped and partly-burnished with a pebble. The majority of pots are twice-fired in an electric kiln; bisc-1000c, glaze-1250c. Glazes are applied by a combination of pouring, spraying and painting, sometimes with painted decoration beneath. Recently I have been experimenting with slip-glazes which can be applied at the leather-hard stage and therefore require only one firing. All glazes are matt.ul Main influences The bold, simple forms of ancient pre-glaze pottery from China and Egypt; the early Cypriot pottery with simple abstract linear decoration and early Persian bowls. In recent times, the work of Hans Coper for its formal strength; Ian Godfrey for playfulness with form and texture, and Lucy Rie for light and colour. "
