This bright, eclectic exhibition presents work by some of Cornwall, the UK and Europe’s most notable new talent. Rising artist EMILY POWELL studied art at the Ecole Régionale des Beaux-Arts de Rouen and has recently been invited to paint the entrance of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. Her uplifting and brilliantly coloured works include surreal still lifes, grand floral depictions and images of ethereal wildlife. Emerging young painter RIA POOLE has been shortlisted for prizes including the Creates Emerging Artist Award 2020, and the Black Swan Open Art Prize 2019. Her playful, painterly works celebrate the power of colour and include plein air and studio studies of the Cornish coast. Recent Falmouth graduate MARTHA HOLMES has captured the attention of the Cornish art scene with works inspired by land and sea, expressed through pure, perfect colour and simple shape, while her equally talented sister CLARA HOLMES is a painter of still life works which push the boundaries of both scale and colour. Painter ANNA CALLEJA is another recent Falmouth graduate, whose tender, intensely personal paintings explore moments of quiet introspection. In 2020 her painting Alone in Quarantine was awarded the Winsor and Newton Young Artist Award, and earlier this year she was awarded the Premju Ghal-Arti for Best Young Artist of the Year by Arts Council Malta. Established artists on show include ground-breaking ceramics, collage and assemblage artist MATTHEW RICHARDSON, who is a graduate of Central St Martins: his abstract works are inspired by chance connections, and the unique properties of multiple materials, finding balance between what the artist calls the “abstract, magical and mundane”. Others include painter EMMA JEFFYRES, whose vivid palette and naïve style have made her one of St Ives’ most distinctive painters, and colourful abstract painters MARK SURRIDGE, and CAROL HOSKIN SMITH, who is an alumni of Central St Martins and Chelsea School of Art, alongside NEIL CANNING, whose work reflects the unique light and dynamism of the West Cornwall landscape. Ceramics include works by sculptural maker ROWENA BROWN, and Camberwell College of Art graduate JUSTINE ALLISON CPA, whose pieces explore the beauty of simple form and pattern.
