This exhibition brings together the recent varied and different practices of two artists: Ralph Freeman who works in painting and mixed media reliefs and Alice Freeman who works in sculpture, etching and ceramics. Both are grounded in abstraction and its expression through line and form with the work exploring this idea through different media. This exhibition then celebrates convergence: where different materials, methods and perspectives come together to generate new connections, accidental surprises and where disciplines intersect and become fluid.
Working in etching and sculpture there is a playful exploration of materials within Freeman's work. The process is often informed by a diverse range of mediums that are manipulated to appear biological and organic. The work combines fragility with strength, creating contradictions that mirror nature's duality. Alice's imagined ecosystems fluctuate between regeneration and decay. She is not interested in producing an accurate depiction of the natural world, but rather in allowing forms to develop that could exist in an alternative reality.
'Freeman's work looks like biological artifacts that have been excavated from deep within the earth, matter that has formed by geological processes over eons of time… forms mantled in chromite black, gnarled and pitted draw you in with the attraction of a black hole. The blackness is devoid of life yet somehow these forms attest to an eternity of a life-giving cycle.'
