Freeman's work looks like biological artifacts that have been excavated from deep within the earth, matter that has formed by geological processes over eons of time… forms mantled in chromite black, gnarled and pitted draw you in with the attraction of a black hole. The blackness is devoid of life yet somehow these forms attest to an eternity of a life-giving cycle.
Working in etching and sculpture there is a playful exploration of materials within Freeman's work. The process is often informed by a diverse range of mediums that are manipulated to appear biological and organic. The work combines fragility with strength, creating contradictions that mirror nature's duality. Alice's imagined ecosystems fluctuate between regeneration and decay. She is not interested in producing an accurate depiction of the natural world, but rather in allowing forms to develop that could exist in an alternative reality.
