Maria Kristofersson's original ceramic works take inspiration from the simple shapes and construction of everyday, throwaway objects. Delicately coil built constructions in clay, her playful and highly distinctive works have the quality of two-dimensional drawings that have come to life in three-dimensional space.
'Proximity, distance and conditions. Lines, surfaces, textures, colours and denominations should be mentioned in this context. They are important. I see them as tools to find my expressions and stories. The clay provides both guidance and resistance.'
Kristofersson works with earthenware clay with a restrained colour palette of terracotta, white and black. The fragile and vulnerable are juxtaposed with robust and strong shapes. The familiar forms of boxes and cylinders act as a canvas for her subtle surface textures. Kristofersson believes that expression is an important element within her ceramic practice, not functionality.
Maria Kristofersson lives and works in Gothenburg. She has had solo exhibitions in Sweden, Norway, and Japan, as well as numerous group exhibitions worldwide.
