Founded in 1965 by celebrated potter Janet Leach and later joined by Mary (Boots) Redgrave and Michael Hunt, the New Craftsman Gallery is one of the most respected and enduring art spaces in the UK. For over sixty years, it has been part of the fabric of St Ives' artistic life - a place where the legacy of British Modernism meets the vitality of contemporary making.
Originally renowned for its focus on studio ceramics, the gallery showcased the work of some of the most influential makers of the time, including Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, Shoji Hamada and Bernard Leach. As its reputation grew, it expanded from ceramics and contemporary craft to include painting, supporting the early careers of leading St Ives artists such as Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron and Bryan Wynter.
Since 2008, the gallery has been under the direction of Ylenia and Paul Haase, who have broadened its vision to embrace a wide dialogue between fine art and contemporary craft. Today it continues to present the work of leading and emerging artists across ceramics, painting, sculpture and jewellery.
Rooted in the traditions of British Modernism that defined St Ives in the mid-twentieth century, the gallery remains a destination for collectors and visitors drawn to the artistic legacy of St Ives. Located at the foot of the hill that leads to the Barbara Hepworth Museum, it occupies a characterful historic building of five light-filled rooms spread over two floors, each offering its own distinct setting for the display of contemporary art and craft.
