Coastal Scene

Winifred Nicholson
Drawing

In 1951 Winifred Nicholson and her friend Kathleen Raine, the poet, made their first visit to Sandaig, a remote promontory on the West coast of Scotland. They stayed in a cottage belonging to Gavin Maxwell, author of Ring of Bright Water, in which he described life with his otters at Sandaig. The pair returned many times to Sandaig and Nicholson made a number of painting depicting the light and colours at Sandaif and along the nearby shore of Loch Hourne. 'This place looks even more beautiful this year in stormy weather, and is even more difficult to paint... the sea is silver is black is azure is lead is white with seahorses is not visible at all'

It was Kathleen Raine who coined the phrase 'Ring of Bright Water'.
