Breon O'Casey
Rare Prints, Collages & Gouaches from the artist's personal collection

This autumn, the New Craftsman Gallery presents a collection of rare and exceptionally beautiful handmade prints and collages by St Ives artist Breon O’Casey, in association with the artist’s estate an including many special pieces from the artist’s personal collection. The New Craftsman’s relationship with the artist goes back nearly 50 years, from the early1970s until his death in 2011 at the age of 82. O’Casey moved to St Ives in 1959 and became assistant to sculptor Denis Mitchell, and later Barbara Hepworth, both of whom had a significant influence on the development of his work. Working from his studio above Porthmeor Beach, throughout his lifetime he was a prolific painter, printmaker, sculptor, weaver and jewellery maker. He went on to become an important figure in 20th Century British art and is known for his use of simple motifs and geometric shapes.

Elspeth Owen
A Line Made by Potting

Elspeth’s hand-built ceramics are concerned with the sense of touch and explore the emotions and sensations of ordinary life. The title of her exhibition makes reference to Richard Long’s landscape intervention work A Line made by Walking (1967) and refers to Elspeth’s journeys on foot around the country delivering her work, keeping company with clay as both “a maker and carrier”. This new collection connects a timeline of work spanning thirty years, from Menopause Pot (1987) and Double Rimmed Pot (1990), to Skipping Rope and Pregnancy Calendar, both created in 2019. The sphere, shallow dish, begging bowl and jar are key forms from her archive of work, which engages with ideas of life, art, therapy, play and ritual.
