Matthew Chambers 2022

Matthew Chambers is known for his distinctive sculptural ceramics, in which layers of coloured clay enclose more and more layers in a way that defies both physical and visual logic. Each work is constructed from individually thrown circular sections, enhanced by a subtle palette of stains and oxides, which are then combined to form concentric designs inspired by the ordered beauty of geometry and constructivist art. Matthew’s extraordinary works are the result of his highly accomplished technical precision and understanding of form, and have advanced the possibilities of ceramic art beyond previously accepted boundaries. This new collection specifically explores the art-historical tradition of the Mandorla used in religious art, in which two circles overlap to form an almond shaped ‘aura’ surrounding a holy figure.

Matthew Chambers is a graduate of the Bath School of Art & Design, an MA graduate of the Royal College of Art, and in 2006 he was awarded the Ceramic Review Prize at Ceramic Art London.
