A selection of Recent Works by Roy Ray
"My current series of small collages allow me to explore a whole new range of shapes, materials and surfaces in a medium that has been central to my practice since moving to St Ives forty years ago.
Like most artists, I have an internal reservoir of responses to the visual world around me accumulated over a lifetime. It seems to me now that abstract painting ( and collage ) allows these preferred colours, shapes and textures to surface and combine to make new works, a practice that frequently throws up the unexpected and generates new ideas.
The small collages I am now making are the result of working spontaneously with these elements as they surface. However, should these works show some evidence of my painting history or echoes of earlier works, maybe I shouldn't be too surprised".
