Free Spirits - paintings by Tony and Jane O'Malley
12th July to 19th July 2014

Free Spirits - paintings by Tony and Jane O'Malley 2013 was Tony O'Malley's Centenary. It was celebrated in Ireland with three major exhibitions, his "Constructions" at the Royal Hibernian Academy of which he was an honorary Member, an exhibition of a hundred self portraits at the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny, a major retrospective at the Taylor Gallery in Dublin and an exhibition of his prints at the Graphic Studio Gallery, Dublin.
2014 has seen the publication of "Free Spirits" a book by Marion Whybrow charting the life together of Tony and Jane O'Malley, the painter he met in St Ives, Cornwall and lived and worked with for thirty years both in St Ives and Ireland.
Jane O'Malley is a significant painter in her own right with many exhibitions in both Ireland and the UK. This exhibition is a perfect opportunity to see both artists' work hung together; Tony O'Malley's paintings span the early 1960s to a joyful painting made in the Bahamas in 1986. There is a beautiful horizontal abstract painting, "Porthmear-Night Wave" which was shown at Tate St Ives in 1995, a painting of his studio interior "No4 Porthmeor Studios" , a painting from the studio looking onto the beach, an early abstract of 1984 of Ding Dong mine and a figurative painting of "Clodgy" with waves hitting the rocks.
Jane's paintings include a number begun in 1988 then taken to Ireland in 1990, kept in her studio and recently revisited and completed this year.
Porthmeor Beach and its weather are central to these paintings often seen through the window of their home, Seal Cottage, with pots and flowers on the sill and gulls flying through the St Ives skies and weather.
Two painters in harmony with the land, sea, studio and home they lived and worked in for twenty years. "Free Spirits" tells the story of two very different people who working together created an artistic legacy in both Cornwall and Ireland.
